Race & Place Workshop
HOUSING

Workshop participants will be housed in the dorms at George Washington University in the Foggy Bottom area of the city. The GW campus is a 15-minute walk from workshop headquarters at Decatur House.

While availability for summer 2008 has been confirmed, specific dorm designations will not be available until May. Estimated nightly rates are listed below. In May, we will update our website with more details about room and bathroom configurations. All dorm rooms are air-conditioned.

- Single Occupancy: $55 per night, $275 total for five nights

Participants should be advised that the GWU campus and its dorms are a student environment, in which loud noises and late-night activities can be common. Workshop participants are welcome to make other housing arrangements but must be present at all sessions.

Participant Stipends and Conditions of Award

Teachers selected to participate will receive a $500 participant stipend and a travel supplement. Stipends and travel supplements are intended to help cover ordinary living expenses, books, and travel costs. Lodging costs will be deducted from the $500 stipend and the remaining balance will be issued to educators, in the form of a check, at the conclusion of the workshop session. A travel supplement also will be provided to workshop participants, with the specific amounts determined by the distance participants must travel to attend the workshop. Participants located 50 miles or less from Washington, DC will receive a $100 travel supplement. Participants located more than 50 miles from Washington will receive a minimum of $300. Travel supplements will be issued by check within one month of the end of the workshop. Participant stipends and supplements are considered taxable income; expenses incurred may be deductible.
